Although 64%of Malaysia is covered in rainforest, we recognize that forest conservation and sustainable agriculture are important to our future as a country and as a planet. On the other hand, we also recognize that a healthy economy and food production is also crucial to a peaceful future. A perfect balance between the needs of people and nature has been implemented in Sabah as a model project that will be replicated, the Deramakot Forest Reserve, a fine example of Sustainable Forest Management (SFM).
The project started in 1989 in collaboration with the German Technical Agency until 2000, but is now managed by the Sabah Forestry Department. The project found ways to connect different pockets of rainforest so that animals can procreate and feed.
